Case Studies

We have helped a wide range of clients over the last 15 years and reasons as to the whys and wherefores of the loss of their data. To that end we have a broad knowledge of problems relating to data recovery as our case studies show.

Case Study 1:

Compaq Proliant Raid 5 System with 2 Virtual Servers

Issue

A Compaq Proliant 7 disk Raid 5 system running small business server had a disk failure. The disk was replaced and a rebuild was run on raid system to. The rebuild went 100% but server would not boot. Company contacted HP Business support team who upgraded firmware on server and ran several tests but could not get to the bottom of the problem. We received in 8 disks, 7 in original drive raid array and the new disk used in the rebuild. 1st thing we completed as per all raid systems is we imaged all working drives. The original drive that failed had a motor failure so we promptly completed a motor upgrade on disk and imaged that disk as well. We then diagnosed the system to establish what the problem was. Even though the system reported as the rebuild completing successfully it only ran to 42% and then stopped so a partial rebuild was run on system.

Our Solution

When a rebuild has only partially completed this normally means a lot of data loss. On top of this the system had two virtual servers running on it. Virtual servers have several layers that contain the data. Each layer needs to be decoded to extract the data. We have a solution that we can recode this type of virtual raid system that have had a partial rebuild and recover a large percentage if not all of the data. In this case we recoded and rebuilt the data and processed the two virtual servers for a full recovery.

* We believe we are the only Data Recovery Company in the UK that can recover from failed Raid systems that have several virtual systems running on the same server.

Case Study 2:

Iomega GDHDU 2tb External Hard Drive Failure

Issue

The Iomega drive failed without warning for client. The Iomega drive connected ok for client and a usb device was getting recognised but it was not showing up in device manager. Client was using Windows 7 on a Dell Inspiron laptop. The client tried the external hard drive on several different computers but would not connect on any computers.

Our Solution

We received in GDHDU 2tb External Hard Drive for recovery. We removed the hard drive from hard drive enclosure and tested it. The drive had electronic damage to the PCB on hard drive and also to the factory firmware that resided on one chip on the PCB. We upgraded drive electronics and copied new firmware to the PCB. This allow us to image the hard drive and complete a full recovery for client. We backed up data onto a new Seagate 2tb Go Flex External Hard Drive.

* We image all hard drives we receive in for data recovery, this keeps the integrity of the original hard drive 100%.

Case Study 3:

Lacie 1TB Network Drive in Raid 0 Configuration (Striped)

Issue

A local Graphic Design Company had a problem with their file storage NAS System. Lacie 1TB Network Drive (2x 500 Gb Samsung HD501LJ Drives), the Lacie netwrok drive was appearing and then disappearing from clients network. Then the device did not get recognised at all. The client tried removing both Samsung drives from the Lacie unit and placed them in a External HDD Docking station. Windows Disk Manager sees the hard drives, but they have not been assigned a drive letter. The HDD’s do not appear in My computer or in numerous Disk Recovery Programs. Clients contacted Lacie support based in France. They advised a few solutions but ended up getting nowhere. Client was recommended to us via their computer support IT company.

Our Solution

The Lacie Big Disk system was setup in a Raid 0 stripe configuration. This means data is striped across both disks. We imaged all sectors on both disks and reset up the rait system and processed data for a full recovery. We performed this recovery within 24 hours as client had business critical data on drive that they needed ASAP.
