A 2003 Drive That Won't Mount

A LaCie external from 2003 that will not mount, and an open question about whether there is anything on it at all. The hope is an iPhoto library from that era. Two assumptions need clearing out of the way before anything else, because both of them cost people their data. The first is that a drive this old has probably forgotten what was on it. Magnetic recording does not fade on that timescale, and a platter written in 2003 holds the same patterns now. The second is that a drive which will not mount is a drive that is empty. It is not: refusing to mount means the filesystem or the drive cannot be read, which is a completely different statement from there being nothing there. The way to find out is to image it and look, not to accept an offer to erase it.

Old drives fail for old-drive reasons and none of them involve the data evaporating. Enclosure electronics from that era were often the first thing to go — FireWire and early USB bridges are less robust than the disks behind them, and a drive that will not mount frequently turns out to be a perfectly healthy disk behind a dead bridge. Taking it out of the case and reading it directly settles that in minutes.

The second class of cause is the filesystem. HFS and HFS+ from that period are perfectly parseable, but twenty years of being unplugged without ejecting, plus whatever happened the last time it was used, leaves catalogue structures that a modern Mac declines to mount. Modern macOS is also less tolerant of very old volumes than it once was, so a drive that mounted fine on a machine in 2009 may be refused outright today.

The offer that must be refused is the one macOS makes when it cannot read a disk: initialise. It appears helpfully, it looks like the way forward, and accepting it writes a new structure over the old one. If there is an iPhoto library on that drive, that single click is the difference between recovering it and not.

The honest position on contents is that nobody knows until it is imaged, and that is fine — the assessment costs nothing and finishes within 2 working days of arrival. If the library is there, it comes back. If the drive was genuinely empty, that is the answer and there is nothing to pay for logical work that found nothing. Either way you stop wondering, which is worth something on its own after twenty years.

It came out of its enclosure first, which removed the era's most likely culprit from the equation entirely, and was read on legacy-capable equipment through a hardware write-blocker. PC-3000 UDMA handles interfaces that modern machines no longer speak to comfortably, which matters on hardware of this age. Health was assessed, then it was imaged read-only on DeepSpar. The old Mac filesystem was reconstructed off the image in R-Studio, the iPhoto library located within it, and its contents carved by content signature where the catalogue had not survived. Every image was rendered before it counted.

The drive read on equipment that speaks its language, the filesystem rebuilt, and the library recovered onto fresh media where it was present. The wider point for anyone with a shelf of old externals: the drives themselves are more durable than most people assume, but the enclosures, the interfaces and the software that made sense of them are not. If material from that era matters, get it onto something current rather than trusting a twenty-year-old box to keep working.

Refuse the offer to initialise. macOS makes it politely and it is the single most destructive click available to you at that moment. Do not run First Aid at it either, and do not reformat it to see whether that brings it back to life — it will not, and it takes the contents with it. If the enclosure is from the FireWire era, understand that the case is at least as likely to have failed as the disk, so a drive that appears dead may simply be behind a dead bridge. Do not attack it with a screwdriver at home unless you are confident; box the whole thing and send it, and say what era of Mac it was last used with, because that narrows down which filesystem to expect.
