The twenty-five ways they quit

First job on any memory card is matching the symptom to the fault. Twenty-odd years in, these twenty-five cover nearly every one that reaches this bench.

Camera, reader and laptop all blank

Three hosts, one answer, and it is not the memory. A controller or its firmware has stopped responding. Your pictures are still held in the NAND, entirely unbothered by the fact nothing can currently ask for them.

The camera wants to format it

What has broken is the file table, not the photographs. Say no. Agreeing turns a cheap job into an expensive one faster than anything else on this page. Eject the card and leave it alone.

SanDisk cards corrupted with the pictures intact

This is the fault we see most and the one owners get wrong most. On an Extreme PRO SDSDXXD, an Extreme SDSDXVE, an Ultra SDSDUNC or an SDSQUAB, what usually gives way is the FAT or exFAT structure describing the card, or the controller's own translation table sitting beneath it. The images themselves are untouched. The host then calls the card corrupted, unreadable or empty and offers a format. Reformatting in camera after that error is what destroys the shoot. Stop there, eject it, send it to us.

Photographs deleted in a hurry

Frames sit in the flash until fresh data is written across them. Drawer, not camera bag, and definitely not another shoot. Do that and most of a deleted folder comes back whole.

Formatted in camera by mistake

Cameras run a quick format, never a deep one, so the shoot underneath survives and lifts out whole. Carrying on shooting afterwards is the only thing that spoils the result.

Snapped, cracked or bent

Slots, wallets and cheap adapters all break cards. If the break missed the internal tracks, the die itself gets probed and read at that level, so a card in two pieces is still worth posting rather than binning.

A 128GB card claiming 30MB

That figure measures nothing at all. It is the identity a controller falls back on once it has crashed. Firmware state, no more than that, and the work from there is chip-level and completely routine.

Read-only and refusing to change

Two very different causes look identical to a computer: a controller locking itself as it dies, or the little slider on a full-size SD card nudged across. One of those takes ten seconds, so it gets checked first.

Through a wash cycle in a jacket pocket

Cards take that far better than owners expect. Clean it, stabilise it, read it at chip level, and a laundered card normally hands back everything it was holding.

Capacity that was never really there

Counterfeits wrap new writes back over one small genuine package as soon as it fills. Whatever went down before the wrap recovers. Whatever came after was never stored, so no lab can produce it.

Pulled out mid-copy

Files half moved and a directory cut off mid-sentence. Instead of believing what survives of the file table, we carve frames out of a raw capture and rebuild each one from its own header.

Dashcam cards looped to death

Continuous recording uses up the flash within a couple of years, and cold starts through an Aberdeen winter add nothing helpful. Carving whichever blocks still read brings the footage back, usually including the clip that prompted the call.

Monolithic microSD, nothing to lift

Controller and memory are sealed into a single slab, so no package can be removed. Test points get identified against pinout records and the memory addressed directly. Longer job. Same result.

CFexpress Type B at full bit-rate

Type B cards in mirrorless bodies and survey drones fail hard at cinema data rates, and they fail with no notice at all. Internally they are PCIe, so the NVMe side of the workshop deals with them.

An Extreme PRO microSD cooked in an action camera

An SDSQXCD sealed in a waterproof housing, run hard along the coast and up the rivers all summer, ages fast. Heat plus vibration advances the read errors by a year or so, and the controller normally gives out before the memory does.

Canvas Select Plus gone mute

Kingston's budget SDCS2 line drops into a dead controller state and stops answering the host completely. Get past that and the memory underneath reads back with nothing wrong with it.

Counterfeit EVO Select and PRO Plus

Fake Samsungs corrupt exactly where writes wrap past the real size of the part. The genuine span carves out cleanly. The sticker on the front persuades nobody at this end.

Lexar Professional cards stalling mid-burst

Long uninterrupted sequences hang the 633x and 1066x cards and scramble whatever was being written when they stopped. Rebuilt from a raw read, because what the card says about itself afterwards is unreliable.

The last clip refuses to open

The power went before the index got written, so no part of the file tells a player where anything begins. All the video data is present. The structure gets rebuilt around it, taken from the stream itself.

It mounts, and every file is empty

Wear-table corruption gives you a card full of zero-byte ghosts wearing the correct names and dates. The real contents remain in the flash below, held back only by a mapping that needs rebuilding.

A cheap reader that cost a shoot

Unbranded readers push cards beyond their voltage tolerance, then let go mid-write when the connection wanders. The saving gets paid for by the card, and a chip-level read is what recovers the shoot.

An archived card losing its charge

Fill a card in 2016, put it in a drawer, and it leaks charge for the next decade. It may well still mount, then return files shot through with errors. Unhurried repeated reads, with ECC allowed to do its work, return far more than a single hopeful copy ever will.

A card too slow for the job asked of it

Sustained 4K and high-bitrate video demand a write speed held continuously, not in bursts. When the card cannot hold it, the buffer overruns, clips get truncated and the directory describes files that stop early. What landed gets carved out. What never arrived is gone.

Power lost during an in-camera format

Half a format, then a flat battery. The card is left carrying part of its old structure and part of a new one, and most hosts refuse it outright afterwards. Better position than it looks, because a format stopped partway also stopped erasing partway.

Recovery software written back onto the card

Utilities that offer to mend a card where it lies, or to save what they find onto that same card, overwrite the exact blocks being read. We see it weekly. At the first sign of trouble, stop, and post the card untouched.

What is actually inside a card

A memory card is a piece of NAND and a small controller in a plastic shell. Nothing is shock mounted, nothing is duplicated, nothing whatever is held in reserve. So the bench rule is image first and investigate second. A sector-level duplicate gets taken before anybody looks at a single file, which keeps the original from taking a second knock and is why a botched attempt somewhere else is usually still salvageable when it lands here. Format makes no difference to the method. SanDisk Extreme, Extreme PRO and Ultra SDXC. Lexar Professional. Kingston Canvas Go Plus. Samsung PRO Endurance out of dashcams and doorbells. Sony TOUGH and ProGrade Digital. Older CompactFlash out of professional bodies. Sony XQD. CFexpress Type A and Type B out of current mirrorless kit. UHS-I or UHS-II, V30 or V90, A1 or A2: the approach is identical. Only the hours change.

SanDisk SD card corrupted: what that message actually means

This one is worth explaining properly, because the wording panics people into the one action that loses the data. A camera reporting a SanDisk SD card corrupted, or a laptop reporting a corrupted SanDisk SD card, is almost never telling you the photographs are damaged. Two separate things live on a card. There are the images, written into NAND pages. And there is a small set of structures describing where those images are: the FAT32 or exFAT boot sector, the file allocation tables, the directory entries. Underneath both sits something you never see — the controller's translation table, mapping logical blocks onto physical pages. It is nearly always one of the descriptions that has broken, never the pictures. Yank a card mid-write. Drop the battery while the buffer is still flushing. Eject it from a reader during a copy. Let a camera brown out on a cold morning. Any of those leaves the structures out of step with what is physically on the card. The camera reads the boot sector, fails to recognise it, and calls the card corrupt. The photographs are still sitting whole in the pages they were written to. Where the controller's translation table is the casualty instead, the card shows 0MB, reports a nonsense capacity, or is not detected at all — and that one belongs on the chip bench rather than the software bench. Now the part that matters. The most destructive possible response to the error is letting the camera format the card. The prompt is worded to look like the remedy. It is the opposite. A format lays a fresh empty file system over the structures that were about to be rebuilt, and on some bodies a full format goes further still and writes across the data area itself. Shooting new frames onto the card afterwards is the other way people lose everything. What SanDisk SD card repair means at this bench is a full sector-level image first, the file system rebuilt from that image, and where directory entries have gone completely, images carved by file header with EXIF used to restore shot order and original dates. SanDisk corrupted SD card recovery of that kind is routine rather than exotic, and the honest summary is short: a card calling itself corrupt usually still holds every single frame. Take it out. Slide the write-protect tab across if it has one. Send it exactly as it is.

Snapped, bent, soaked and stood on

Physically broken cards go to the chip bench. A microSD has nothing to separate, since controller, memory and contacts are moulded into a single monolithic part, so the way in is the test points on the body. Probe those, pull a raw dump, then rebuild the dump into files that open without argument. Success turns on whether the break spared the internal tracks, and that is what the free assessment settles instead of guessing. Full-size SD cards are more forgiving. Controller and memory sit as separate components on a small board, so a cracked shell often means nothing has happened to the electronics at all. Salt air works slowly on contacts near the harbour and along the coast, and contact corrosion cleans up more often than not.

Engineering kit, not downloaded software and hope

Card work is microsurgery over bare flash, carried out on the rigs below, the same ones that handle sticks and one-piece devices:

PC-3000 Flash

Talks to the memory packages directly and reproduces in software the arithmetic a dead controller used to perform. When a stick or card answers nothing, the job restarts here.

Chip-off station

Infrared and hot-air profiles tuned so a memory package parts from a scrapped board with its stored charge undisturbed. Temperature discipline is the whole skill, and hurrying it costs data.

Monolith spider-board adapters

Many cards hide everything in one slab with no package to lift. Test points get identified against pinout records and wired out by hand. Slow work. Also the only work that reads them.

NAND reconstruction suite

XOR, ECC and wear-levelling unpicked until a raw dump comes back as named folders carrying their original dates. Ordinary arithmetic applied stubbornly, ending in files.

Micro-soldering bench

Torn tracks, lifted pads and sheared plugs rebuilt under magnification, plus ROM transplants where a board is beyond saving. Plenty of dead sticks need this and nothing more. It does not extend to storage soldered onto a motherboard, which we do not take on.

Hardware write-blockers

SanDisk dominates this tray, and not by a narrow margin. Extreme PRO SDSDXXD, Extreme SDSDXVE, Ultra SDSDUNC, plus the microSD SDSQUAB and SDSQXCD, account for most of what comes through the door. In the large majority of those cases the memory is in perfect order while the file-system structures or the controller's translation table above it have failed. A card reported as corrupted is therefore usually good news rather than bad. The worst thing an owner can do at that moment is let the camera reformat it. Around the SanDisks: Lexar's Professional 633x and 1066x stall on long bursts, Kingston's Canvas Select Plus falls silent at the controller, Sony TOUGH cards shrug off physical abuse and then fail electronically, and Samsung EVO Select and PRO Plus arrive counterfeit roughly as often as genuine, corrupting neatly where writes wrap past the true capacity. CFexpress Type B keeps growing as a category, because wildlife and landscape photographers working the coast, wedding shooters covering venues through Aberdeenshire and Moray, and survey operators flying for the energy sector all run those cards with no margin whatsoever. Dashcam and doorbell cards get their own line, since looping wears flash out and does nothing else. The footage comes back by carving whatever blocks survived it.

Getting it to the bench — plainly done

Nearly everything on this bench came by tracked, insured post. It is the safest way to shift a failing drive, and a parcel handed in at a North-East post office is usually here the next working day.

Still bolted into a laptop, desktop, MacBook, iMac, server or CCTV / DVR box? Get the hard drive or SSD out first. The bare drive travels on its own. Stripping machines down is not a job this lab takes on. Flash soldered to a motherboard, as on Apple Silicon Macs and a couple of very thin laptops, is our one flat no: if it will not unbolt, it cannot be worked on.

Almost certainly not. That message concerns the file system or the controller's mapping, not the images, and a corrupted SanDisk SD card usually still holds every frame on it. Two rules from here. Do not let the camera format it. Do not shoot anything else on it. Take it out and send it in the state it is in.
Usually not, provided the card came out of use at once. Deleting drops the index entry only. The images stay put until something new lands on top of them. So the card belongs in an envelope rather than back in the body, and nothing else gets shot on it before it is posted.
No. That prompt means the camera cannot read the card's index. It says nothing about the pictures underneath. Formatting lays a clean empty structure on top of them and buries the lot a layer deeper. Take the card out and leave it alone.
Not automatically. Where the internal tracks came through the break, the silicon still reads directly and the state of the shell stops being relevant. Breaks vary enormously, so save every fragment, send the lot, and the assessment answers you straight before money is mentioned.
