First job on any usb stick / flash drive is matching the symptom to the fault. Twenty-odd years in, these twenty-five cover nearly every one that reaches this bench.

Snapped off at the plug

Knees, bag straps, a chair shoved in without looking. Leverage wins every argument it enters. Where enough board survives, it gets rebuilt under the microscope. Where it does not, we go straight to the memory.

Windows can hear it but cannot name it

It enumerates, then talks rubbish. That is a controller or its firmware failing, not data going anywhere. Not one file has shifted. Something simply has to speak for the memory again.

0MB, or a request to insert a disk

The controller has woken up holding no map of its own memory. Read the packages directly, rebuild the mapping in software, and the two are reintroduced to each other.

An offer to format it

Torn file table above intact files. Refuse, remove the stick, and post it exactly as it is. Anything written from now on sits on top of the files we would otherwise be handing back.

Files deleted

Recoverable until the freed space gets claimed by something new, and not a moment past it. From here, the safest place for that stick is a drawer rather than a port.

Warm to the touch, silent to the computer

Something inside has shorted and the stick is cooking itself slowly. Get it out of the port. Every further minute in a live socket comes out of whatever margin the memory has left, and nobody can put that back.

Joints cracked by flexing in the socket

Left standing upright in a port, a stick becomes a lever with a long arm and endless patience. The solder joints fracture. The memory packages usually never notice anything happened.

A one-piece monolith gone quiet

Nothing on these can be lifted off. Mapped test points get probed by hand under magnification instead. Slower road, identical files at the far end of it.

Twice, in one memorable case. Dried and cleaned properly on a bench, laundered sticks do better than owners dare hope. Plugging a damp one in to check is what ruins them.

Shortcut virus leftovers

A spell in a shared machine and everything becomes a lookalike link. The genuine folders are almost always hidden underneath the deception, complete and undamaged.

A terabyte printed on 16GB of flash

Marketplace classic. Once the real package fills, writes fold back over it. Whatever landed before the fold carves out cleanly. Whatever followed was never recorded anywhere.

Two exits are well known on the SDCZ50. The neck shears at the root of the plug, or the capacity collapses to zero without warning. Both have a standing routine here, and neither one surprises anybody.

DataTravelers gone catatonic

The Exodia DTX, and the older DT100 G3 before it, lock into a controller state that answers nothing. Arguing with that wastes a day, so the memory gets addressed directly at chip level.

Ultra Fits cooked where they sit

An SDCZ430 is built to live permanently in a socket, and a hot laptop port is a poor address for three years. The controller gives out and monolith probing takes over the job.

Ultra Flairs shedding their jackets

The SDCZ73's metal shell works loose and takes a track or two with it. Board rework under the scope first, then a complete image off the repaired stick.

Store 'n' Go worn out by office duty

Verbatim's office staple ends up carrying live work instead of moving files between machines, which is years of writing it was never rated to take. It declines slowly, then stops without notice.

Integral Couriers and Neons giving out

Grit works into the Courier's retractable slider and the Neon simply ages out. Failures land on the controller far more often than on the memory, which is the good half of that news.

Verdigris across the contacts

Salt air off the North Sea, pocket damp and years of handling oxidise the contacts, and the stick then appears and disappears at random. Dress the contacts properly first, then take a single continuous image instead of a dozen half-attempts.

Spiked through a front port

A storm, or a power supply on its way out, pushes a surge through a tower's front sockets and whatever is plugged in takes it. Controller cremated, memory generally untouched behind it.

Five years in a drawer

Flash left in a drawer bleeds its charge away, so an old archive reads back weak. Image it slowly, allow ECC the time it needs, and a great deal survives that one brisk pass would have thrown out.

Repaired into a folder of numbers

Accepting the Windows repair prompt produces a folder of numbered fragments carrying no filenames. Those fragments get ignored completely, and the genuine layout is rebuilt from a raw image of the memory.

The controller die cracked by leverage

Bend a stick far enough and the silicon inside can crack while the board looks straight and the solder looks sound. It will never enumerate again, because the component responsible for enumerating is in pieces. Chip-off, then a software rebuild of the mapping.

Worn out as a boot stick

Running a live operating system from a stick, or rewriting an installer onto it every few months, is a workload no promotional flash drive was built for. Wear-levelling fails first, then whole blocks stop answering. Earlier writes usually remain reachable.

Jammed into permanent write-protect

Hit an error mid-write and a controller can flip itself protected and stay that way for good. Every utility reports a write-protected disk, and the registry edits recommended on forums change nothing, because the flag lives in the controller's own tables.

Wiped by a mass-production tool

Owners track down the manufacturer's low-level format tool and run it hoping to cure a fault. It builds the controller's tables again from nothing and discards the record of where every file used to sit. Recovery then means reading raw memory and solving the arrangement from first principles. That is the work this bench exists for.

Snapped necks, and micro-soldering scoped honestly

Memory sticks, pen drives, thumb drives, whatever your office calls them: the weak point never moves. It is the joint where the metal connector meets the small board inside. One knee against a laptop bag does it. Work goes on under a stereo microscope. Torn pads get rebuilt, lifted tracks bridged, a fresh connector fitted. If the board is beyond that, the NAND comes off and goes on a programmer, so nothing on the stick's own electronics ever has to function again. It stops there, and the boundary is worth stating plainly. Storage soldered to a motherboard is not recovered here. Not by micro-soldering, not by anything. Phones and tablets sit outside this service too. Loose flash, yes. Anything welded into a mainboard, no.

Controllers, and what they decide

A short list of controllers sits inside almost every stick: Phison, Silicon Motion, Alcor Micro, Chipsbank, Innostor, SMI. Which one is present is not trivia. It sets the page mapping, the ECC scheme and the XOR pattern, and therefore how a raw dump gets turned back into a file system. Get it wrong and you have a flawless copy of nothing readable. The regulars are simply what people buy. SanDisk Cruzer Blade, Ultra Flair and the tiny Ultra Fit. Kingston DataTraveler DT100 G3, the metal DTSE9 G2 and the newer Kyson. Samsung BAR Plus and FIT Plus. Verbatim Store 'n' Go, Integral Courier, PNY Attaché, Lexar JumpDrive. Monolithic designs seal controller and memory into one part, and those need test points rather than a soldering iron. Slower going, and the assessment identifies it long before you are asked to decide anything.

Deleted, infected, or dead one morning

Deleted the wrong folder? Or come back from a print shop with every document showing as a shortcut icon? The second is an irritation rather than a disaster, because that class of infection hides far more than it wrecks. Deletion is much the same story: the space gets marked free, nothing is scrubbed. Which makes the instruction dull and effective. Drawer. Unplugged. Hands off. Here the stick gets copied end to end, and the documents are carved out of that copy. Never out of the original. Sticks that simply died one morning with no drama at all follow the same route, straight to the chips.

Engineering kit, not downloaded software and hope

Stick work is chip work throughout. From booking in to going home, the job never leaves the flash bench:

PC-3000 Flash

Talks to the memory packages directly and reproduces in software the arithmetic a dead controller used to perform. When a stick or card answers nothing, the job restarts here.

Chip-off station

Infrared and hot-air profiles tuned so a memory package parts from a scrapped board with its stored charge undisturbed. Temperature discipline is the whole skill, and hurrying it costs data.

Monolith spider-board adapters

Many cards hide everything in one slab with no package to lift. Test points get identified against pinout records and wired out by hand. Slow work. Also the only work that reads them.

NAND reconstruction suite

XOR, ECC and wear-levelling unpicked until a raw dump comes back as named folders carrying their original dates. Ordinary arithmetic applied stubbornly, ending in files.

Micro-soldering bench

Torn tracks, lifted pads and sheared plugs rebuilt under magnification, plus ROM transplants where a board is beyond saving. Plenty of dead sticks need this and nothing more. It does not extend to storage soldered onto a motherboard, which we do not take on.

What people actually carry in a jacket pocket

Payroll runs, site reports, inspection photographs, dissertations and quotations sit in startling quantity on four models: Cruzer Blade, Ultra Flair, Exodia and Attaché. Most of it exists in no second place. Each one fails to type. Slim metal SanDisk bodies run hot and work loose from their shells. An SDCZ50 either shears at the neck or reports zero capacity one morning. Long budget Kingston sticks lever themselves against tight front ports until the joints fracture. A Store 'n' Go gets treated as live storage until wear-levelling gives up. Couriers and Neons fill office drawers and run until their controllers stop, which is normally years past reasonable. Conference freebies are a lottery, and the only sound rule about them is that nothing important should live on one alone. Every job here is read at chip level. Getting it to the bench — plainly done

Nearly everything on this bench came by tracked, insured post. It is the safest way to shift a failing drive, and a parcel handed in at a North-East post office is usually here the next working day.

Still bolted into a laptop, desktop, MacBook, iMac, server or CCTV / DVR box? Get the hard drive or SSD out first. The bare drive travels on its own. Stripping machines down is not a job this lab takes on. Flash soldered to a motherboard, as on Apple Silicon Macs and a couple of very thin laptops, is our one flat no: if it will not unbolt, it cannot be worked on.

  • Bubble wrap, then a rigid box or padded envelope packed tight enough that nothing rattles. Keep the cables, caddies and power bricks at home.

Common questions

Seldom. The question is whether the memory came through the bending, and it generally has. Most get put right at the connector; where the board is beyond saving the chips are read on their own. Send every piece you have, the stub still wedged in the laptop included, if you can work it free.
Because the file table has torn and no readable map is left. That says nothing at all about the files sitting underneath it. Decline the offer. Unplug it. Post it. Formatting stacks a fresh problem on the original one, and then you have two to dig through instead of one.
Yes, so long as nothing has been written over the freed space. Every plug-in somewhere new shortens those odds a fraction, so a drawer is where it should sit in the meantime. The free assessment then states exactly what survives before you commit to anything.
Nothing to look. Then one written figure, to accept or decline. Deleted and corrupted files count as logical work and get billed only when the data comes back. Connector rebuilds and chip-off reads are physical work: priced above that band, and a 50% deposit is taken against the quote. Nothing ticks over in the background.
