Whichever drive holds the only copy is the one that ends up on the floor. Portables and mains units reach this bench in every state there is: clicking, beeping, flashing, silent. They go home as readable files on fresh media. LaCie is a house speciality here. If that is the badge on the case in front of you, read the LaCie section before the cable goes anywhere near it. External drive repair and recovery are the same job here: the enclosure comes off and the disk inside is worked on directly.

First job on any external drive is matching the symptom to the fault. Twenty-odd years in, these twenty-five cover nearly every one that reaches this bench.
This is how a portable drive normally ends. Heads meet platters, and every power-up after that gambles with whatever is still readable. Trying it once more gains you nothing whatsoever.
Something in the chain has quit. It will be the bridge board, the electronics on the drive itself, or the firmware. Meanwhile the disk inside is alive with nobody to speak on its behalf. A staffing problem, and one we can solve.
Pull a cable mid-write and the file table shreds, which produces exactly that prompt. Everything behind it is fine. Refuse flatly, unplug it, and let it sit until it is posted.
A spindle motor loading against stuck heads, broadcast in morse through the plastic. Unplug it, resist the urge to try again, and send it in as it stands.
WD builds encryption into the USB board itself. Drop the naked disk into a hopeful caddy and what you get is static wearing filenames. That whole chain has to cross over as one, and here it does.
Mains-powered desktop units give out at the power stage. Some of those are the cheapest repair on the premises, some the most awkward, and the free diagnostic decides which one you have.
Bad sectors on the march turn any file copy into treacle. Imaging hardware moves faster than the decline. Repeated hopeful copying feeds the decline and shortens the time available.
Deletions and formats on an external recover well, on one strict condition: the drive gets parked at once and stays parked. Anything done with it afterwards subtracts from the result.
Hard winters split pipes, and drives end up under water. Platters put up with far more of that than owners expect. Clean, stabilise, and transplant in filtered air where the mechanism will not turn.
Knock one of Seagate's slimmest portables and it answers in clockwork clicks. There is barely room inside for matters to improve on their own. Donor stacks sit within arm's reach of that bench.
The orange rubber round a LaCie helps confidence more than it helps physics. One landing too many and you have a standard head job wearing an unusually smart jacket.
Years of nightly backups work Toshiba's micro-B port loose, after which it connects only at particular angles. Reflowed under the scope, or bypassed entirely while imaging runs.
T7 units and SanDisk Extreme portables exit electronically with no click at all, since nothing inside one is capable of clicking. Flash-bench jobs in an external's clothing.
Pulling it out without ejecting works fine until the day it does not, and after that nothing will mount it. Reassembled out of one complete capture rather than repaired where it lies.
Somebody caught the lead and the port came with it. Pads get rebuilt under magnification, or the bare disk gets imaged directly when the board is past helping.
Shingled media turns up inside a great many newer 2.5-inch externals. Under a large copy it stalls, then leaves the bus altogether. We image at whatever pace shingled recording will accept.
Run a portable round the clock and it wears out years ahead of schedule, because nobody designed it for that. Round-the-clock duty is what NAS drives are built to handle.
Some bargain portable SSDs amount to a cheap card, a bridge chip and a well-finished case. Whatever genuinely reached the card gets recovered. The case is worth nothing to anyone.
Bus power along a long lead, or through a hub carrying no supply of its own, browns the drive out mid-write over and over, invisibly. The damage builds up and gets undone from a complete image.
The encryption is genuine, and that is precisely the difficulty. Hand over the password and the job is routine. Without one you get a straight answer instead of hope billed by the hour.
Interrupted backups damage the bundle until restores refuse to run. We repair the band files, then mine the history for whichever versions actually matter.
Bare drives get shucked out of budget external cases to save a few pounds, and some then refuse to spin in a PC because of the way one pin on the power connector gets used. The symptoms are indistinguishable from a dead drive. The drive is fine. Worth ruling out before anyone assumes the worst.
Windows cannot read Apple file systems, so it pronounces the disk empty and unformatted, then attaches a helpful offer. Accept it and a fresh partition structure lands on top of a perfectly good one. Decline and it costs you nothing, because on the right machine that disk reads perfectly.
Drives living on a boat, in a yard by the water, or in a workshop at Peterhead take in damp air and constant low-level vibration. Vibration wears the bearings, damp corrodes the connectors, and the pair of them arrive together after roughly three seasons.
Aim a repair utility at a disk full of bad sectors and it makes matters worse in slow motion. It rewrites structures from data it cannot read reliably, and it keeps at that for hours. Send it unrepaired. Undoing repairs on an original is far harder than performing them on a copy.
Strip the case off any external and what you find is a plain 2.5-inch or 3.5-inch mechanism. Nothing more. WD My Passport and Elements. Toshiba Canvio Basics and Advance. Seagate Expansion, Backup Plus, One Touch. Buffalo MiniStation, Verbatim Store 'n' Save, Iomega, LaCie. So every technique on the disk bench applies to them untouched: donor heads, motor work, board swaps with your ROM carried over, patient imaging. What externals add is punishment. They live in camera bags, in kit bags going out to site, on the corner of a desk that is one elbow away from the floor. Drop a spinning mechanism onto anything hard and the heads land, which is why so many arrive clicking. No sound in the building is more familiar. Careers get kept on these things by photographers, surveyors and site engineers, and each unit is dealt with on that footing. Take the fact that governs every LaCie job first. The case holds a Seagate or Toshiba mechanism and nothing more exotic than that. LaCie has belonged to Seagate for years. So the enclosure comes off, the bare disk comes out, and the job becomes standard drive work: matched donor heads, motor attention where the spindle has gone, a donor board carrying your original ROM, then a slow full image. With the lid off, that is the entirety of LaCie data recovery. It also explains why anyone hoping to repair LaCie external hard drive hardware ends up with plain disk work about ten minutes after arrival. Now the beeping, which gets misread more often than any other symptom in this trade. A LaCie hard drive beeping is not a death rattle. It is the spindle motor attempting to spin, failing, and attempting again about once a second. Two causes cover nearly all of it. One is supply. Bus-powered 2.5-inch units take their whole supply through the USB port. The Rugged range does, and so do the brushed-aluminium Porsche Design mobile drives. A worn cable, an unpowered hub or a shared socket on a thin laptop leaves them a fraction short of what spinning up demands. The other is mechanical: a seized spindle bearing, or heads that settled onto the platters and stuck. Swapping cables will not touch the second one, and every repeat attempt makes it worse. Knowing the range helps. Rugged models wear the orange rubber bumper, run off the bus, and are built for exactly the handling they get. Rugged SSD versions contain nothing that moves and fail the way any SSD fails. The desktop units run off their own mains supply: d2, d2 Professional, 2big, 2big Dock. On those a failed power brick imitates a dead drive convincingly, and it is worth ruling out before you pay for postage. One last point on encryption. Most LaCie enclosures hand the disk through in the clear, which makes them markedly simpler than WD portables. The Secure models are the exception, along with anything set up under LaCie's own encryption software, and neither goes anywhere without the credentials.
Pull the mechanism out of a recent WD portable, connect it to a plain SATA port, and the screen fills with noise. That is intentional. On those models the little USB bridge is a link in the encryption chain, so a disk separated from its bridge is unreadable by design. A good number of the more agitated phone calls here start at that precise moment, mid-experiment, at somebody's kitchen table. It is a routine problem. If the original bridge still functions, it handles the decryption. If it does not, a donor board plus a reconstructed key chain does the same job. Either way what comes back is your folder tree, in order, rather than a screen of static.
An external is a bare drive in fancy dress, so the whole drive workshop applies, backed by the bridge specialists:
Firmware rig. It opens service mode, rebuilds translators, trims defect tables and reads back locked firmware zones. Downloadable software reaches none of that, which is the reason so many drives get condemned before anyone competent looks at them.
Failing mechanisms get copied head by head with current draw watched the whole way. Timeouts run per sector in hardware. An awkward region therefore costs minutes, not the remaining life of the drive.
Lids come off in filtered air only. House dust is bigger than the flying height of a head, so a lid lifted at a kitchen table has already cost you something.
Combs, jigs and lifters. A head stack or a complete platter pack moves from one chassis to another without any two surfaces meeting. That rule holds for every job, whatever the deadline.
Racked by model, firmware family and factory code. On a head stack, close enough is no match at all, so the sorting earns its keep. Donors for most jobs are already on site.
Self-encrypting portables, WD's above all, get imaged through their original bridge. Where that board is dead, the encryption chain is rebuilt so imaging can go ahead without it.
Interface boards held on our own racks and matched carefully, so a drive's encryption survives the swap instead of departing with the old board.
Counted by arrivals, Expansion and Passport units lead the table, with T7-class solid state gaining a little every quarter. The log throws up two standing notes. One: with WD, encryption is handled by the USB board, which means a dead bridge forces the whole chain across rather than trying caddies in hope. Two: the slimmest Seagate portables reply to any knock with clicking, which follows straight from how little room there is inside them. Retired badges out of drawers undress into ordinary mechanisms our donor racks have covered for years, so an orphaned brand on the outside is a routine job on the inside.
There is no longer anybody at Iomega to telephone. EMC took the name, Lenovo took it after that, and eventually it stopped being used at all. The drives keep coming out of drawers regardless: brightly coloured eGo portables, desktop units that served ten years as a household archive, Home Media boxes untouched since the children moved out. An orphaned brand is not an unrecoverable one. Lift the shell and inside sits a mechanism from Samsung, Seagate or WD of a kind our racks have stocked spares for since the day it was current, and the imaging route is identical to the one a drive bought this year would follow. If the old case will not come apart, post the whole unit. Prising awkward legacy enclosures open without harming what sits inside is a fair part of this trade.
LaCie kit is built for people who carry things around with them, which is precisely the habit that wears it out. A Rugged that lives in a camera bag along the coast, or a d2 parked beneath an edit desk: both get shifted about, and a turning platter has no worse enemy than movement. Set a Rugged down hard while its platters turn and the head stack settles the account, orange rubber or not. Mains-powered ranges fail down a completely different path, shedding an interface board while the disk sitting behind it remains in fine order. Seagate absorbed the brand, so no manufacturer route survives and the job lands in a workshop instead. Off with the shell, image the bare disk, fresh heads where that landing demands them. Your projects handed back from the copy.
Treat a My Passport as one sealed instrument rather than as a disk inside a case. Its USB socket mounts directly onto the drive's controller board, and hardware encryption runs inside that same silicon. Kill the electronics and your files remain locked exactly where they sit. Put the naked disk into a spare caddy and all you get is static with filenames on it. We keep donor boards for both the WDBPKJ and the WDBYVG generations, and fitting one takes the encryption chain across intact. That one step separates a Passport which never appears again from a Passport that mounts. My Book units go a different way entirely. Power brick first, bridge second, wrapped round a mechanism that proves to be in excellent order.
Every injury available to a 2.5-inch portable gets collected by a MiniStation eventually. Dropped on a floor. Socket worked loose. Sector damage turning up on a timetable it sets itself. Buffalo's mains-powered DriveStation range usually outlasts its power supply and its interface board while the disk carries on regardless, which is good news dressed as bad. Hardware encryption features in several MiniStation variants, and given the password that layer gets opened during the work, so whatever comes back reads as ordinary files. Running order never changes: shell off, complete sector image, recovery performed on the copy and on nothing else.
Nearly everything on this bench came by tracked, insured post. It is the safest way to shift a failing drive, and a parcel handed in at a North-East post office is usually here the next working day.
