It Lights Up but Doesn't Register

It lights up. It has always lit up. The laptop still does not see it, and years of photographs are on it. This one had already been to another company, come back with nothing, and arrived here as a second opinion with the owner's expectations set fairly low. A light means the enclosure is receiving power. That is the entire extent of what it means. Whether the drive behind it can spin, calibrate, read its own firmware and announce a capacity is a separate question, and answering it needs equipment that talks to the drive below the USB layer. Plenty of firms do not have that equipment. Being turned away by one of them is not a verdict on your data — though we will tell you honestly if the second look reaches the same conclusion.

Take the light seriously as evidence and no further. It says the enclosure has power. On most portable drives the light is wired to the bridge board, not to the disk, so it will happily glow above a mechanism that is not turning at all. It tells you nothing about spin-up, nothing about the heads, and nothing about whether the drive got as far as reading its own firmware.

Not registering is the symptom that matters, and it has a short list of causes. Firmware or service-area damage, where the drive cannot read its own configuration off the platters and therefore never announces a capacity. A board fault, where the electronics cannot bring the mechanism up. A head or motor fault, where the mechanism physically cannot get to the point of reading anything. Each of the three needs different work, and none of them can be told apart through a USB port.

Which is the honest explanation for the first firm's result. A great deal of what is sold as data recovery is software run against whatever the operating system can see. If the drive never presents itself, the operating system sees nothing, the software finds nothing, and the customer is told the data is gone. That is a true report of what that firm could do. It is not a statement about the platters.

We say the same thing to everyone arriving with a second-opinion job: the second look is free and honest, and it may confirm the first. If a previous attempt involved opening the drive outside clean air, or running it hard for hours, the position can genuinely be worse than it was. It came out of its enclosure first, so that the drive could be reached directly rather than through the bridge board that had been mediating every previous attempt. It was read on PC-3000 UDMA through a hardware write-blocker, with power behaviour, the firmware and service area, the board and the mechanism all assessed one at a time. Once the fault was identified it was dealt with according to what it was — service-area repair, board repair with the drive's own ROM, or clean-air work under laminar flow had the mechanism been at fault — and only then was the drive imaged on DeepSpar. The photographs were located in R-Studio from the image and opened by rendering, not by filename, before anything was called recovered.

Read directly, the fault addressed, and the photographs recovered as far as they could be reached. The assessment cost nothing whether or not the answer had been good news. One fixed written figure including VAT followed, before any chargeable work, and the band it fell into was stated at the same time: logical and firmware work carries no fix, no fee, while opening the casing means 50% before the clean-air stage with the balance only on a result. The lesson worth taking from it is narrow but useful — a drive returned unrecovered has been beaten by one set of equipment, and that is not the same thing as the data being gone.

A drive another firm could not recover

Ask two questions of anybody who has already had it. What equipment did they use, and did they open the drive. If the answer to the first is software and the drive never appeared on a computer, the software never had anything to work with and a second look is worth having. If the answer to the second is yes and it was not done in clean air, say so — contamination changes what is realistic and it is better known in advance than discovered under the microscope. Do not keep plugging it in while you decide.
