A Drink Went Into the Laptop

A drink went in, the machine died, and an Apple store could not extract anything because it will not turn on. The machine is not wanted; the data is. Liquid damage is an electronics problem before it is a data problem, and the two need separating quickly, because one of them is on a clock. Corrosion does not stop when the laptop dries out. Sugar and salts left behind on the board keep eating tracks and component legs for weeks, and every day of that makes the electronics harder to bring up. The storage itself is usually the last thing affected, so the work is to clean the board, get the drive or SSD out, and read that on its own. There is one hard condition attached, and it applies to modern Apple laptops: if the flash is fixed onto the logic board, it sits outside what we take.

The reason an Apple store could not help is procedural rather than technical. Their route to your data runs through a machine that starts. No power, no migration, and no further options within their process. That is a fair account of what they can do and it says nothing at all about the storage.

What liquid actually does is short circuits and corrosion. The short is instant and usually kills the power section; the corrosion is slow and gets worse. Sugary drinks are the worst because the residue is hygroscopic and keeps pulling moisture back out of the air, so a laptop that feels bone dry can still be corroding under the shields. This is why the standard advice about a bag of rice is worse than useless — it addresses the moisture and ignores the residue that is doing the damage.

Because the storage sits away from the usual entry points, it is frequently untouched. The board gets cleaned in an ultrasonic bath and inspected under magnification, and the drive or SSD comes out and gets read on its own. Whether the machine ever runs again is beside the point and nobody spends money finding out.

The condition attached is the same one that applies to every modern Apple laptop here: if the flash is soldered onto the logic board, we do not take it, and we say so before a parcel is sent. On machines with a removable drive or blade this is straightforward work. Liquid damage is physical work, so it is quoted with 50% due before the bench stage and the balance only on a result, after a free assessment that finishes within 2 working days of arrival.

Nothing was powered while there was any prospect of moisture or live corrosion. The board was cleaned in an ultrasonic bath with isopropyl, dried properly, and examined under the microscope at magnification so the extent of the corrosion could be seen rather than assumed. The storage type was confirmed first: a removable drive or SSD was taken out and read through a hardware write-blocker, quite separately from whether the machine would ever start again. It was imaged read-only, and the filesystem was parsed and the files validated in R-Studio from that image before anything went to fresh media. Had the flash been soldered to the board, the job would have stopped at that point and been returned unworked and unbilled.

Board cleaned, storage removed and read on its own, and the data brought back onto fresh media whether or not the laptop would ever power again. The assessment cost nothing and ended with one fixed written figure, VAT included beforehand. Liquid damage is physical work: half the quote was settled before the bench stage, with the balance owed only on the result. The point worth taking from it is the one about time. The files were reachable because the board and the storage were dealt with while the corrosion was still limited, and every week that a wet machine sits in a drawer moves the odds the wrong way.

Do not switch it on to see whether it survived, and do not put it on charge. Both push current through a board with conductive liquid on it and turn a survivable spill into a dead one. Forget the rice; it does nothing about the residue that is actually corroding the tracks. If you can, take the battery out of the circuit and get the machine to somebody quickly, because this is the one fault class where waiting genuinely costs you. Send the drive or SSD alone if it comes out easily. If your machine is a recent Apple laptop with soldered flash, ring before you post anything, because that storage cannot be removed and is not something we can take on.
