One power supply looks much like another until the wrong one goes in. A Maxtor external took mains through the wrong adaptor and stopped, with the circuit board on the underside visibly the worse for it. That is a board fault, and a board fault is one of the better things to be told, because the damage stops where the drive was designed to let it stop. Hard drives carry a fusible protection device on the board for exactly this event: it burns out and takes the surge with it, leaving the motor, the heads and the platters behind it intact. The work is at the electronics, not at the data. What it is not is a swap — every drive's board carries settings unique to that individual drive, and a replacement fitted without them will spin the disk and read nothing.

The board on the underside of a hard drive is its power supply and its interpreter. It takes what comes in, feeds the motor and the head electronics, and translates between the disk and whatever is plugged into it. Push the wrong voltage into that and something on the board gives way. Manufacturers plan for this: a small fusible device, usually a TVS diode, is placed there to fail first and short the surge to ground before it travels further.
That design is why the news is better than it sounds. When the protection has done its job, the mechanism behind it never saw the fault. The platters carry the same magnetic patterns they carried before the adaptor went in. What is dead is a component the size of a grain of rice, and a drive that is dead in that particular way is one of the more predictable recoveries on this bench.
The trap is the internet's favourite answer: buy the same model second-hand and swap the board over. It does not work on any drive made this century. Every board holds a ROM containing calibration data unique to that individual mechanism — head resistances, preamp settings, defect maps built at the factory. Fit a stranger's board and the drive spins up, presents itself, and returns nonsense or nothing. The ROM has to be read off the original board and moved across, or the original board repaired outright.

Board work counts as physical work here, so half the quote was settled before the bench work and the rest once the data was actually in hand. Worth recording for anyone in the same position: the platters were never in question. All the damage the wrong adaptor did was to the electronics that sit between the disk and the outside world, which is precisely where a drive is built to take the hit.
Do not plug it in again, and do not try a third adaptor to see whether the second one was the problem. The first surge stopped at the protection device; a second one may not, and the difference between a board fault and a burnt preamp inside the sealed casing is the difference between a straightforward job and an expensive one. Resist the advice about buying an identical drive and swapping the board — the calibration data on the original board is not interchangeable and a bare swap reads nothing. Label the drive with what happened, box it so it cannot move, and send it. Board faults are among the more predictable recoveries there are, provided nobody makes them worse first.
