Mechanical failure is not one fault, it is a family, and narrowing it down changes both the method and the price. Failed heads are the most common and usually announce themselves with a click or a repeating rhythm. A failed arm gives a drive that spins normally and reads nothing. A seized spindle gives silence, warmth and a heavy current draw. Each needs a different donor and a different sequence of work.
What they share is that the platters are underneath and untouched. Nothing in a mechanical failure erases data. The recording sits where it was written, and the entire task is restoring the drive's ability to read it for long enough to take a complete image.
The reason a laboratory rather than a workshop is not snobbery about tools. It is particles. A head flies over a platter at a height measured in nanometres, and a speck of ordinary indoor dust is enormous by comparison — get one under a head and it gouges the surface. Work happens under laminar flow, which is filtered air moving in a smooth sheet across the open drive, and it is the only reason opening a drive is survivable at all.
So the shop stopping was the customer's good fortune. The failed component was replaced with matched donors — heads and their arm assembly, or the motor, or the platters moved across onto a matched donor base where the spindle itself had gone — and alignment set. It was imaged on DeepSpar and the data assembled and checked in R-Studio from the image.

Physical work consuming donor parts and hours under laminar flow, so half of it was settled before that stage with the balance owed only on the result. The repair shop's contribution is worth recording plainly: they ran the tests, read the answer correctly, declined to open it, and sent it on switched off. That combination is why this was a routine job rather than a difficult one.
