An IT Friend Opened It, and It Beeps

A LaCie that went on the floor and now beeps continuously. Cables and other computers tried, nothing. A friend who works in IT opened it, concluded the fault was mechanical, and could not take it further. The diagnosis was right and worth saying so. The opening is the part that has to be handled carefully now. Beeping is the sound of a spindle motor trying to turn platters that will not move, usually because the heads have settled onto the surface and bonded there after the impact. That is a seizure, and it is worked in clean air. But a drive opened in an ordinary room has had unfiltered air, and whatever was floating in it, over the platters. That does not end the job. It does mean the platters get inspected for contamination and cleaned before anything else happens.

Beeping is a mechanical noise with a very specific cause. The spindle motor energises, tries to turn, cannot, and the drive's electronics cut power and try again. The rhythm of that cycle is the beep. In almost every case the reason the platters will not turn is that the heads are resting on the surface and bonded to it, which is what a fall does to a drive that was running at the time.

That is why more cables and more computers achieved nothing. The problem is not the connection, it is that nothing is rotating. And each attempt is the motor pulling hard against bonded heads, which risks tearing the surface if it eventually breaks them loose — exactly where the data is.

The friend's diagnosis was correct and useful. The opening is a separate matter and needs stating without drama: ordinary room air is full of particles that are enormous relative to a head's flying height, and a drive opened outside filtered air has had those particles settle on the platters. It does not automatically ruin a recovery. It does mean an inspection under magnification and a clean before anything is powered, and it means the honest estimate of what comes back is made after that inspection rather than before it.

The work itself is a seizure release under laminar flow: the heads are freed from the surface, or the platters are transferred to a matched donor base if the motor or the bearing has gone. It was not forced further on arrival — a beeping drive that has been dropped and then opened is not something to power up hopefully. It was run from a bench supply with the current limited, where the stalled motor and the stuck heads were confirmed by current draw rather than by listening alone. It was opened under laminar flow, and the first job was inspecting the platters under the microscope at magnification for whatever had settled during the earlier opening, then cleaning it. The heads were freed from the surface, with the platters moved across onto a matched donor base where the motor required it, and alignment set. It was imaged on DeepSpar with PC-3000 UDMA driving the drive and the data assembled and checked in R-Studio.

Seizure freed under laminar flow, contamination from the earlier opening cleaned, the drive imaged, and the data brought back onto fresh media. Assessment free, and one fixed written figure with VAT in it beforehand. Physical work, so half fell due before the clean-air stage with the balance owed only on a result. Two things are worth separating in the write-up. The friend's diagnosis was correct and saved time. The opening added a step and some uncertainty that would not otherwise have existed — which is not a criticism of a helpful friend so much as a reason for the next person to stop one step earlier.

Stop powering it. Beeping is a stalled motor, and every attempt risks tearing the surface if the heads break loose under load. If somebody has already opened it, say so plainly when you send it — nobody is going to tell you off, and it genuinely changes how the job is approached and what is realistic. Put the cover back on loosely to keep further dust out, do not touch the platters, and do not attempt to spin them by hand. For anyone reading this before the fact: opening a drive to look inside is the one intervention that cannot be undone. A diagnosis from a knowledgeable friend is worth having; the screwdriver stage is not.
