It Lights Up but Won't Connect

A WD external about ten years old. The light comes on and looks entirely normal. Nothing detects it over USB, and a new lead changed nothing. Buying the cable was the right first move and it has now done its job by ruling itself out, which leaves the drive. The light is worth understanding because it misleads almost everybody: on most external enclosures it is driven by the bridge board, not by the disk, so it reports that the case has power and nothing more. The disk behind it may be spinning normally, may be silent, may be failing to read its own firmware. Not being detected means the drive never completed the sequence that ends with it announcing a model and a capacity, and which link in that chain has broken cannot be established through a USB port on any machine.

A ten-year-old external is at the age where several things go at once, and separating them matters. The enclosure holds a bridge board that converts USB to the drive's native interface, a power circuit, and the indicator light. The drive is a separate component behind all that. Any of the four can fail, and only one of them threatens the data.

The light being on tells you the enclosure has power and its bridge is at least partly alive. It is not connected to whether the disk spun up, calibrated, read its firmware from the service area or built its address translation. That whole sequence happens out of sight, and until it completes the drive says nothing to anybody.

So the useful step is to take the drive out of the case and read it directly. That immediately answers whether the fault is in the enclosure — which happens often enough at this age to be worth checking first — or in the disk. If it is the disk, the same connection allows the firmware, service area, board and mechanism to be assessed individually rather than lumped together under not detected.

One caution about doing that at home. On some models the USB electronics are built onto the drive's own board, so there is nothing to remove, and on some the bridge encrypts what it writes, which means the bare disk reads as noise without its original enclosure. Neither is an obstacle on the bench, and both are reasons not to force a case apart with a screwdriver and a hopeful attitude.

The drive came out of the enclosure so that the bridge board stopped mediating everything, and was read on PC-3000 UDMA through a hardware write-blocker. Power behaviour, the firmware and service area, the board and the mechanism were each looked at separately, which is how a symptom becomes a diagnosis. The fault was then dealt with according to what it was — a service-area repair where firmware modules had failed, board repair carried out with this drive's own ROM where the electronics were at fault, or head or motor work under laminar flow in filtered air where the mechanism had gone. Once it presented itself the drive was imaged on DeepSpar and the data assembled and checked in R-Studio.

Read directly, the fault addressed, the data brought back onto fresh media. Assessment free and finished within 2 working days of arrival, producing one fixed written figure, VAT included before anything chargeable. Firmware work is logical work running under no fix, no fee; board repair, or a drive requiring the casing to be opened, takes half the figure before that stage with the balance only on a result. The owner was told which applied at the same time as the price. And the light, for the record, carried on glowing throughout — it was never evidence of anything except a live enclosure.

A drive that lights up but will not connect

You have already tested the cable, so stop testing cables. The light means the case has power and says nothing at all about the disk, so do not treat it as a sign that the drive is nearly working. Listen to it once with the room quiet: any click, tick or beep means mechanical, and that means unplug it and stop entirely. Silence means the fault is more likely firmware, service area or board, which is the better outcome. Do not accept any offer to initialise or format it, do not run repair tools, and do not prise the case apart at home — on some models the USB electronics are part of the drive and on others the bridge encrypts, so a bare disk pulled out may be unreadable by anything you own.
