It Shows Up but Clicks and Won't Run

Eight or nine years old, listed in Device Manager, light flashing away, and clicking steadily while refusing to do anything useful. Both halves of that description matter and they say opposite things. Being listed means a device has been detected at the port. The clicking means the heads cannot read and are retrying. The enclosure's bridge chip is what Windows is seeing; the drive behind it is failing. That combination catches people out, because a drive that appears in a list looks like a drive that is nearly working, and so it gets left plugged in for another twenty minutes while somebody reads a forum. Those twenty minutes are expensive. Clicking heads are touching the surface your files are written on, and they do not improve with practice.

The decode

Clicking is a mechanical sound with a mechanical cause. The head stack moves out over the platter looking for the servo pattern that tells it where it is. It fails to find it, retracts to the ramp, and starts again. That cycle is the click, and it repeats until something stops it. A drive doing that cannot read a single sector, which is why it will not run no matter how long you leave it.

The listing in Device Manager is a separate fact and it misleads a lot of people. External enclosures contain a bridge chip that converts between USB and the drive's own interface, and that chip enumerates as soon as it has power. Windows lists it. The disk behind it may be spinning, seized, or clicking its way through another hundred retries, and none of that changes what the list says.

Age is relevant here without being decisive. Eight or nine years is a long working life for a consumer external, and heads do wear — the lubricant on the platter surface degrades, the head sliders eventually make contact, and once that begins the failure accelerates. The data itself does not degrade at anything like the same rate. What has failed is the reading mechanism, not the recording.

So the outcome hangs on the platters, and the platters hang on how long it was left running after the clicking started. Heads replaced in clean air over undamaged surfaces produce a full image and a complete recovery. Heads replaced over scored surfaces produce whatever survived. Inspection under magnification settles which, and the recoverable extent is confirmed before anything is charged.

It was not powered again after arrival. It was taken out of the enclosure and run from a bench supply with the current limited, where the clicking pattern could be characterised in a few seconds without letting the drive continue to work at it. It was then opened under laminar flow. The heads had failed; the platters were examined under the microscope at magnification and found sound, which is the answer everybody wants and does not always get. A matched donor head stack was fitted, the alignment set, and the drive imaged on DeepSpar with PC-3000 UDMA driving it. The filesystem was rebuilt in R-Studio from that image and the contents validated by opening them.

Heads swapped under laminar flow, the drive then imaged, the data brought back onto fresh media. Assessment free, and one fixed written figure with VAT in it before any work began. This was physical work — the casing had to be opened and donor parts were consumed — so half the quote fell due before the clean-air stage with the balance owed only on the result. The single fact worth carrying away from it is the one at the top: the drive appeared in a list on the computer the entire time it was destroying itself, and the list was never evidence of anything.

A drive that shows up but clicks and will not run

Unplug it. That is the whole of the advice and it is worth more than anything else here. Clicking is the head stack failing and retrying, and each cycle risks contact with the surface holding your files. Being listed in Device Manager means a bridge chip has power, nothing more, so do not treat the listing as a sign of life worth encouraging. Do not run chkdsk at it, do not let recovery software grind away overnight, and do not put it in a freezer whatever the internet says. Set it aside, write down roughly how long it clicked for after you first heard it, and have it assessed. That figure genuinely affects what comes back.
