It Sat in a Drawer for Ten Years

A Western Digital external from 2005, put away and forgotten for more than ten years. Connected now, it cycles power every few seconds, warms up when it is plugged in directly, and never makes the sound of a disk spinning up. Two faults produce that description, and the good news is common to both: magnetic data does not fade in a drawer. Either the board cannot bring the mechanism up and is retrying, which is the power cycling, or the spindle motor has seized after years at rest and the drive is drawing current trying to turn something that will not move, which is the warmth. Neither is a statement about the data. Everything written on those platters in 2005 is still there in the same arrangement, waiting for something capable of reading it.

The decode

Take the myth first, because it stops people sending drives at all. Magnetic recording does not evaporate. A platter written in 2005 holds the same domains today, and the material degrades over decades rather than years. Drives that have sat unused fail for mechanical and electrical reasons, not because the data faded away in the dark.

The two candidates are distinguishable by current draw. A board that cannot initialise the drive will attempt it, fail, drop power and try again, which is the few-second cycle being described. A spindle that has seized will draw hard while the motor stalls, and stalling motors get warm — that is the heat with no spin.

Seizure after long storage is a real phenomenon and it has two forms. Stiction, where the heads have settled onto the platter surface and bonded, so the motor cannot break them free. And bearing seizure, where the lubricant in the spindle bearing has migrated or gummed. Both are worked under laminar flow: the heads are freed or removed from the surface, or the platters are transferred to a matched donor base with a healthy motor.

The mistake worth avoiding is persistence. People plug an old drive in repeatedly, on the reasonable theory that it might catch. A stalled motor drawing heavily is heating a mechanism that cannot move, and heads bonded to a platter can tear the surface if the motor eventually does break them loose. One or two attempts tell you what you need. The tenth tells you nothing and costs you something.

It went onto a bench supply with the current limited behind a hardware write-blocker, where the cycling and the current draw were watched — which is how a board that cannot bring the drive up is told apart from a motor that will not turn. Where the board was the fault it was repaired using this drive's own ROM, since the calibration data on it is not interchangeable. Where the spindle had seized, the drive was opened under laminar flow and the seizure released, with the platters moved across onto a matched donor base where the bearing itself had gone. It was then imaged on DeepSpar with PC-3000 UDMA driving the drive and the data assembled and checked in R-Studio.

The board or the motor addressed as the fault required, the drive read, and the data brought back onto fresh media two decades after it was written. The assessment cost nothing and ended with one fixed written figure, VAT included beforehand. Both routes are physical work — a donor board or a clean-air stage — so half the figure fell due before the bench work with the balance owed only on a result. The point that surprises people is the plain one: the age of the drive was never the problem, and the files came off exactly as they were left.

An old drive that powers but will not spin up

Try it once or twice, then stop. If it cycles power, warms up or stays silent, further attempts achieve nothing and a stalled motor pulling current is heating a mechanism that cannot turn. Do not tap it against the desk to free the platters, keep it out of the freezer, and do not leave it connected hoping it eventually catches. If you have a boxful of old drives you have been meaning to get to, deal with them sooner rather than later — the electronics and the bearings age whether or not the drive is used, and the data on them does not. Send the bare drive, and mention how long it has been out of service, because it changes how the first power-up is approached.
