It Spins but Won't Connect

It switches on, the disk is clearly turning, and no computer will connect to it. The owner had reasoned it was a hardware fault and wanted to know the cost before committing to anything. Both the reasoning and the question were sound, and the answer to the second one is that finding out costs nothing. Audible rotation is genuinely useful information: it means the spindle motor and its driver are working, which removes the seized-motor and dead-board scenarios from consideration. What is left is a drive that spins but cannot complete the sequence ending in announcing itself, and that usually points at firmware or the service area, or at a board fault that stops short of killing the motor. Those are among the more predictable jobs on this bench, and both are quoted at a fixed figure before a screwdriver is lifted.

Rotation is worth more as evidence than most people realise. It proves power is reaching the board, the board's motor driver is working, and the spindle and its bearing are healthy. Those are three of the more expensive failure modes eliminated in one observation, without connecting anything to a computer.

What remains is the part of start-up that happens after the disk is up to speed. The heads have to calibrate, the firmware has to be read out of the service area — a reserved region on the platters that no operating system ever touches — and the translation between logical addresses and physical positions has to be built. Only then does the drive report a model and a capacity. Fail in there and you get exactly this: a drive that spins forever and connects to nothing.

Service-area faults are common and unspectacular. Firmware modules live on the platters like everything else and are read on every start-up, so they wear like everything else. When one becomes unreadable the drive stops at that step. Repair the module and it comes up as though nothing had happened, and the user data behind it is untouched.

It was read on PC-3000 UDMA through a hardware write-blocker. The rotation was confirmed as healthy, then the firmware, the service area and the board were each assessed in turn, which narrows a drive that spins and will not connect down to a specific failed component rather than a general description. The fault was dealt with according to what it was — service-area or firmware repair where the modules had failed, board repair carried out with this drive's own ROM where the electronics were at fault. Once the drive presented itself normally it was imaged on DeepSpar, and the data was located and validated in R-Studio from the image before being written to fresh media.

The useful observation to pass on is that spinning drives that will not connect are frequently among the cheaper recoveries, because the mechanism is intact and the work is at the firmware level. People often assume the opposite and delay for months on the strength of it.

Note that it spins and stop there, because that is your most useful observation and further testing will not add to it. Do not accept any prompt to initialise or format it — Windows offers this readily to a drive it cannot interpret and it writes over the structures a recovery reads. Do not run repair software at a device the computer cannot see anyway; there is nothing for it to work with. If it starts making any noise it did not make before, that changes the fault class to mechanical and it should be switched off immediately. Otherwise, ask for the figure before you commit, which is the right instinct: the assessment costs nothing here and the quote is fixed in writing before anybody opens anything.
