It Stopped After the Cable Was Pulled Out

The port had been bent at some point, the way Micro B ports are, and it had carried on working the way strained things do until the day somebody pulled the lead out at the wrong angle. After that, nothing on any machine. New cable, different computers, no result. This is a connector fault, and connector faults are worth separating firmly from drive faults, because the data is not in the socket. Micro B is a small, flat plug soldered onto a board with a handful of tiny pads, and once a bend has cracked those pads a good contact can never be made again. The drive behind it is generally in perfect health and has no idea anything happened. It just cannot be spoken to through that particular hole.

Micro B is the weak point on a generation of portable drives, and it fails in a predictable sequence. First a bend, usually from a lead being left in while the drive sits in a bag. Then intermittency, where it works at one angle and not another. Then a disconnection that puts a shear load through the joint and lifts the pads off the board. From that point the contact is gone and no cable in the world restores it.

The reason this matters is that people treat it as a dead drive. They try three leads, four computers, and a friend's laptop, all of which are testing the same broken joint, and they conclude the disk has failed. It has not. The disk has been sitting in the dark waiting, in exactly the state it was in before the lead came out.

There are two ways past it and the choice depends on what is left of the board. If enough pad remains, the socket is re-soldered or rebuilt and the drive read through it, which is the tidier route and hands back a working device. If the pads have torn, the drive is lifted out and read on its own native interface instead, which bypasses the connection entirely.

One caution belongs here. On a good many modern portable drives the USB circuitry is built onto the drive's own board and there is no separate bridge to bypass, and on some the bridge encrypts, which means the bare disk reads as noise without it. Neither is a barrier on the bench, but both are reasons not to attack an enclosure with a screwdriver at home to see what is inside.

The enclosure came apart and the socket went under the microscope at magnification, where the failed joints and the state of the pads could be seen properly rather than guessed at. Where the pads allowed it, the connector was rebuilt and the drive read through the repaired socket. Where they did not, the drive was lifted out and read through a hardware write-blocker on its own interface, which sidesteps the connection completely. Either way the drive itself was healthy. It was imaged on DeepSpar and the data assembled and checked in R-Studio from that image.

The drive read past the failed connection and the data brought back onto fresh media. Assessment free, one fixed written figure before anything started. Connector and board work is physical work, so 50% fell due before the bench stage with the balance owed only on a result. Worth noting for the next person: nothing at all was wrong with the drive. The entire fault lived in a piece of stamped metal about four millimetres across, and the file that mattered had been sitting intact on the platters the whole time somebody was buying replacement cables.

Stop testing cables. If the port has ever been bent, or the drive has ever worked only at a particular angle, the fault is at the connection and no lead will fix it. Do not push a plug in harder to make it seat, because that is how a cracked pad becomes a torn one. Do not open the enclosure yourself either — on plenty of modern drives the USB electronics are part of the disk's own board, and on some the bridge encrypts what it writes, so a bare disk pulled out at home may not be readable by anything. Box it as it is, mention the bend and the disconnection when you send it, and let the socket be looked at under magnification.
