It Won't Show Up on Anything

A 1TB Seagate portable that malfunctioned and has not been recognised since. Tried on the laptop, tried on several other devices, nothing anywhere. All that testing has actually accomplished something: it has eliminated the hosts, which is a step people often skip and then argue about. What is left is the drive itself, and the reason it is invisible is that it never gets as far as announcing what it is. A hard drive has to spin up, calibrate, read its own firmware from a reserved area of the platters and build its address translation before a computer sees anything at all. A failure anywhere in that chain produces silence. Which link has gone is not something a USB port can tell you, and it is not something more devices will reveal. It needs equipment that speaks to the drive underneath the interface.

Not detected is a symptom, not a diagnosis, and it covers at least four completely different faults. Firmware or service-area damage, where the drive cannot read its own configuration and stops before announcing anything. A board fault, where the electronics cannot bring the mechanism up. A head fault, which usually comes with a noise. A motor fault, which comes with silence and warmth. Each needs different work and different money.

The reason more devices do not help is that every one of them asks the same question through the same interface and gets the same non-answer. A laptop, a television, a games console and a friend's desktop are all waiting for the drive to identify itself. It cannot, so they all report nothing, and the tenth attempt is no more informative than the first.

What does distinguish them is behaviour under controlled power. On a current-limited supply, a board fault, a stalled motor and a drive that spins and calibrates but cannot read its firmware look entirely different — different current profiles, different sounds, different points of failure. That takes minutes on the right bench and is impossible through a USB socket.

It is worth saying which of these is good news. Firmware and service-area faults are among the more tractable recoveries there are: repair the module, the drive presents itself, and the data comes off complete. Board faults are similar. Mechanical faults cost more and depend on the platters. It was read on PC-3000 UDMA through a hardware write-blocker rather than through the interface that had already refused to help. Power behaviour, the firmware and service area, the board and the mechanism were each looked at separately, which converts not detected into an actual fault with a name. That fault was then dealt with according to what it turned out to be — service-area repair where firmware modules had failed, board repair carried out with this drive's own ROM where the electronics were at fault, or head or motor work under laminar flow in filtered air where the mechanism had gone. Once the drive would present itself it was imaged on DeepSpar, and the data was located and validated in R-Studio from the image.

Read at its own level, the fault addressed, and the data brought back onto fresh media. Stop looking for a device that will see it. You have run the elimination and it came out conclusive, and every further attempt is either harmless and pointless or, if the fault is mechanical, quietly expensive. Listen to it once before you give up: a click, a tick, a beep or a repeating rhythm means mechanical, and that means switch it off and do not power it again. Silence with a bit of warmth usually means the board or the motor. Either way, decline every prompt to initialise or format, do not open the casing, and send the bare drive tracked and insured with a note saying what it did and what has been tried.
