A 2009 MacBook Pro whose hard drive stopped working. An Apple store tried to image it and could not make the drive appear at all, and suggested recovery. No physical damage, nothing dropped, and the working theory was simply age. The store's account is precise and it points straight at the fault: their imaging attempt needed the drive to announce itself first, and it never did. That is the signature of a firmware or service-area problem rather than a mechanical one. The good news is twofold. A 2009 MacBook Pro has an ordinary removable SATA drive, so the storage comes out and can be read on its own — none of the soldered-flash complications of later machines apply. And service-area faults are among the more tractable recoveries there are.

Every imaging tool, Apple's included, has the same prerequisite: the drive has to identify itself before anything can be copied off it. Announce a model, announce a capacity, respond to reads. A drive that never gets there is invisible to the whole category of software, which is why the store's attempt produced nothing and why that result is a useful clue rather than a dead end.
The reason a drive fails to announce itself, in the absence of noise or impact, is usually the service area. That is a reserved region on the platters holding the drive's own firmware, translation tables and defect lists. It is read at every start-up and it wears like any other part of the disk. When a module in it becomes unreadable, the drive halts before presenting a capacity and simply sits there.
Repairing that is standard bench work on the right equipment: the service area is addressed directly, the damaged modules are rebuilt or replaced from the drive's own backup copies, and the drive comes up normally. The user data is entirely unaffected by any of it — it is stored elsewhere on the platters and was never in question.
The model year is worth dwelling on. A 2009 MacBook Pro uses an ordinary 2.5 inch SATA drive held in by a bracket and a few screws. Take the description at face value: if nothing can see the drive, no software of any kind can help, and running more of it is wasted effort. Stop attempting boots and stop trying recovery utilities, because a drive halting during start-up is still spinning up and calibrating each time you try. Find the model year before anything else — a 2009 through 2012 MacBook has an ordinary drive that unscrews and is read on its own, while anything from 2018 has soldered flash that cannot be removed and cannot be taken here. If yours is the older kind, take the drive out and send that alone rather than posting a laptop. And if it makes any noise at all, that changes everything: switch it off and say so.
