A 2019 MacBook Pro that failed after the screen was cleaned, declared beyond economic repair, with work files on it that matter and storage that will not come out. The phrase beyond repair is about the machine. On most laptops that would be good news, because the drive comes out and gets read on its own. On this one it is not, and we would rather say so now than take your money. Every MacBook Pro from 2018 onward has its flash soldered directly to the logic board and bound to the T2 security chip, which encrypts everything with keys held in that specific chip. There is no drive to remove and no way to read the memory somewhere else. Soldered storage is the single category this bench does not accept, on any make, and this is the honest end of the conversation rather than the start of a quote.

It helps to be exact about what changed in 2018. Before that, a MacBook Pro held an ordinary drive or a removable SSD blade. It unscrewed, it was read on the bench, and the state of the machine around it barely mattered. From 2018 Apple soldered the flash chips onto the logic board and routed everything through the T2 security chip, which encrypts on the fly using keys that never leave that chip.
That design has two consequences. The first is that the memory cannot be removed and read elsewhere, because it is soldered. The second is that even if it could, what came off it would be ciphertext tied to a chip that is not going with it. The encryption is not an obstacle to be worked around; it is the entire storage architecture.
This is why we decline it rather than attempt it, and why the answer arrives on the phone. Some firms will take the parcel, work on the board, and charge for the attempt. We do not, because storage soldered onto a motherboard is the one thing outside our intake and there is no version of that job we can honestly quote.
What remains is worth knowing, because it is not nothing. If the logic board can be brought back to life even briefly, Apple or an Apple-authorised repairer can sometimes migrate data off in place — that is a board repair with a data outcome, not a data recovery, and it is their trade rather than ours. Beyond that it is backups: iCloud, Time Machine, or whatever else was running. Neither route involves posting anything to us, and we would rather point at them than take a job we cannot do.
This one did not reach the bench, which is the correct outcome. The model was identified from the serial and the storage confirmed as soldered, T2-bound flash before any parcel was sent. The owner was told the limit plainly, in one phone call: there is no drive to remove, the flash cannot be read away from its own board, and nobody here will pretend otherwise for a fee. The two remaining routes were set out — an Apple or Apple-authorised attempt to bring the board up long enough to migrate data in place, and whatever backups exist in iCloud or Time Machine. Nothing was charged and nothing was posted.
No recovery undertaken and no charge raised. That is not a failure so much as the system working: the assessment is free precisely so that jobs which cannot be done get identified before anybody spends money on postage, packing or hope. The customer left the conversation knowing exactly why, which of the two remaining routes to pursue first, and that no laboratory anywhere is going to give a different answer about soldered T2 flash. It is worth adding the general rule for everyone reading this, because it applies well beyond Apple: if the storage will not come out of the machine, it cannot come in here.
Check the model year before you do anything, because it settles the whole question. Anything from 2018 onward has flash soldered to the logic board and locked to the T2 chip, which means no removable drive, no chip-level route, and nothing we can take. Anything earlier hands over a drive or a blade and is an ordinary recovery. If yours is the later kind, your realistic routes are Apple or an Apple-authorised repairer attempting a board-level revival long enough to migrate the data in place, or a backup you already have — check iCloud and Time Machine before assuming there is none. Do not pay anybody who promises to lift soldered, T2-bound flash and read it elsewhere. Ring first and get the answer for nothing.
