The Connection Finally Gave Out

It had been temperamental for months — fine at one angle, dead at another, propped against a book to keep it working. Now no angle works at all. That history is a complete description of a connector failing slowly, and it is worth recognising because the warning period is generous and almost nobody uses it. A USB socket is held to the board by a handful of small solder pads. Every insertion at an angle levers them. They crack, then they make contact only under pressure, then they stop making contact at all. The drive behind that socket has been in perfect health throughout and remains so. The data is on the platters, not in the connector, and getting to it means either rebuilding the socket or bypassing it entirely by reading the drive on its own interface.

Connector failure is one of the few faults that announces itself well in advance, and the announcement is exactly what was described: it works at one angle and not another. That is a cracked solder joint making contact only when the plug is pushed in a particular direction. It is not a cable fault, it is not a computer fault, and buying a new lead will not touch it.

The failure progresses because every insertion loads the joint a little more. Eventually the pad lifts off the board entirely, or the socket's anchoring tabs tear through, and no amount of angle or pressure restores contact. That is the point most drives reach this bench, and it is entirely avoidable — the months of intermittency were the window in which everything should have been copied off.

The important thing is what has not happened. The disk inside has been powered less and less as the connection deteriorated, so it has usually had a gentle time of it. Take it out of the enclosure and read it on its own interface, and it is typically in fine health. Alternatively the socket is rebuilt under a microscope and the drive read through the repaired connection, which is the tidier result.

Two cautions about doing this at home. On many modern portable drives the USB circuitry is on the drive's own board, so there is no separate disk to remove and the repair has to be at the connector. And some enclosures encrypt at the bridge, which means a bare disk pulled out reads as noise. Neither stops the job here; both are reasons not to take a screwdriver to it yourself.

The enclosure came apart and the connector went under the microscope at magnification, where the cracked socket and the state of its solder joints and pads could be assessed rather than guessed at. Where enough pad survived, the socket was re-soldered and rebuilt, and the drive read through the repaired connection. Where the pads had torn away, the drive was taken out and read on its own native interface through a hardware write-blocker, bypassing the connector entirely. The disk itself was healthy in both scenarios. It was imaged on DeepSpar and the data assembled and checked in R-Studio from the image before it went to fresh media.

The drive read past the failed connection and the data brought back onto fresh media. Assessment free, and one fixed written figure with VAT in it beforehand. Connector work is physical work, so half fell due before the bench stage with the balance owed only on the result. The thing worth taking away is the timing. This drive gave months of warning, in the clearest possible language, and the warning was answered by propping it at a better angle. Anything that only works at one angle is on its way out, and the correct response is to copy everything off it that evening.

A connection that grew temperamental and then failed

If a drive currently works only at a particular angle, stop reading this and copy everything off it now. That is the whole of the useful advice and it expires without notice. Once it has failed completely, do not wedge, tape or hold the plug to force contact — intermittent contact during a read produces corrupted copies, and levering a cracked pad turns a repairable joint into a torn one. Do not buy more cables; the fault is in the socket on the drive. Do not open the enclosure at home either, since on many models the USB electronics are part of the drive itself and on some the bridge encrypts. Box it as it is and mention how long it had been intermittent.
