The USB connector has come away from the board. A replacement board had already been bought, and the enquiry arrived with a piece of knowledge attached that most do not: that the settings stored on the original board have to be exchanged onto the new one. That is correct, and it is the single most misunderstood fact about hard drives, so it is worth stating properly. Every drive's board carries a ROM holding calibration data unique to that individual mechanism — head resistances, preamp settings, adaptive parameters and the factory defect map. Fit a board from an identical model without moving that data across and the drive will spin up, present itself, and return nonsense or nothing at all. The board is not a spare part. It is half of a matched pair, and the other half is the mechanism it was calibrated against.

Start with the fault itself, which is mechanical damage to a solder joint. USB connectors are attached by a few small pads and a couple of anchoring tabs, and they are levered every time a cable is inserted at an angle. Eventually the pads lift. Once the connector is off, there is no electrical path into the drive, and the drive behind it is untouched and entirely healthy.
There are two routes back and the choice is decided under magnification. If enough pad survives, the connector is rebuilt on the original board and the drive read through it, which is the cleaner outcome because the original board is already matched to this mechanism. If the pads are torn beyond repair, the replacement board goes on — but only after the ROM has been read off the original and written to the new one.
That ROM is the part people underestimate. It is not a serial number or a firmware version. It contains parameters measured against this specific head stack during manufacture, and adaptive values the drive has updated during its life. Without them the new board drives the heads with the wrong settings. The usual result is a drive that appears at the wrong capacity, or presents a garbled surface, and every attempt to read it in that state risks adaptive data being rewritten incorrectly.
Which is why the well-meaning advice about buying a matching drive on an auction site and swapping the board fails on any modern disk. It worked, roughly, twenty years ago. It does not work now, and the attempt often makes the eventual proper job harder. Getting the enquiry from somebody who already knew this made the whole thing quicker.
The original board and the detached connector went under the microscope at magnification, where the state of the pads and the surrounding joints decided the route. Where the pads allowed, the connector was re-soldered and rebuilt and the drive read through it, keeping the original matched board in place. Where they did not, the supplied replacement board was fitted only after this drive's own ROM and adaptive data had been read off the original and transferred onto it. The drive was brought up behind PC-3000 UDMA on a current-limited supply so any second fault would show as current draw rather than as damage, then imaged on DeepSpar with the data assembled and checked in R-Studio.
The connection put right, the board correctly matched to the mechanism, and the data brought back onto fresh media. Assessment free, and one fixed written figure with VAT in it before any of it started. Connector and board work is physical work, so half the figure fell due before the bench stage with the balance owed only on a result. Credit where it is due on this one: the owner had already worked out that the ROM has to move with the board, which is the exact point at which most home board swaps fail, and knowing it saved a conversation and a wasted attempt.
Do not try to hold the connector in place with tape, glue or pressure to get one last copy off. A joint that has lifted makes intermittent contact, and intermittent contact during a read is how a straightforward job becomes a corrupted one. If you have bought a replacement board, keep the original — it holds the ROM and adaptive data that make the new one work, and without it the replacement is a paperweight. Do not fit the new board yourself and power it up to see, because the wrong settings on a live drive can cause adaptive data to be written incorrectly and that makes everything afterwards harder. Send both boards with the drive and say what you have already tried.
